Savonlinna – often called the most beautiful town in Finland – and its environs were popular resorts for the Russian aristocracy from the beginning of the 20th Century onwards. Still today a local spa upholds these traditions. There is also an 18- hole golf course near the town. You can do your shopping in Savonlinna, or – if you want the best and widest selection – go to Helsinki. The most notable annual event in Savonlinna is the Opera Festival held in the medieval castle of Olavinlinna. Festival is the leading opera event in Finland and among the most significant also internationally. The castle is open all year and its facilities can be rented for conferences and private parties. The airport nearest to Exclusive Island is 15 km from the town of Savonlinna, and there are daily flights to Helsinki and back. Savonlinna can also be reached by train, and if you want to come by luxury yacht, Lake Saimaa is connected to Gulf of Finland by Saimaa Canal. In or around Exclusive Island you can also, for example, fish, hunt for game, surf and sail. If you want to fly aircraft or gliders, the Savonlinna airport can be used as a base. During winter there are 350 km of snowmobile tracks and some 60 km of marked skating routes. |
